Tip-7 Starting point

Egmond as a starting point

Due to its location, Egmond is a perfect base for visiting many other towns and villages.  It is an ideal starting point for trips to “ art village” Bergen, Schoorl, the cheese town of Alkmaar and Castricum.

The best way to explore the area is by ( electric) bike. The amazing traffic-free cycle paths give you premium views of Egmond and its surroundings.
Bergen is a leafy village with beautiful villas, monumental buildings, trendy galleries, exclusive shops and interesting museums.
The dunes around Schoorl are the highest and the widest of the Netherlands. There is even a climbing dune in the centre of the village; great fun for kids! The visitor centres “ Buitencentrum Schoorlse Duinen” in Schoorl and “ Bezoekerscentrum De Hoep” in Castricum provide you with ( digital) information about the flora and fauna of Egmond and surrounding areas ( free entry). It is also interesting to pay a visit to  Het Huis van Hilde, an archaeological museum in Castricum that is home to fascinating displays, collections and exhibitions about e.g. the Romans and Frisians.

An absolute must-see is the cheese market in Alkmaar. Every Friday morning from April till September cheese carriers carry the cheese on special racks into the weigh house where the cheese is weighed on old scales. Not only the cheese market, but also the Cheese Museum and the charming shops in the historic city centre are worth a visit.
